Elevator Pitch No. 2

Reflection from my first elevator pitch:
Wow! I really was not sure on what people would think about my proposed pitch, but it seems that it would actually be a good thing people would use!
It was neat to read some of the comments I had about my video. Some things that were said about my elevator pitch was that it was dynamic, clean, concise, and that I was enthusiastic. This was a real confidence booster for me!
Some things that I appreciated hearing about was the view point that it may be difficult for the user to sing some rhythms and things like guitar solos because they perhaps may be “bad singers” or have difficulty remembering the sounds exactly, so that was a good point to mention.
I also didn’t know that there is an app online that allows you to put out beats by tapping them with the keyboard, so that was cool to know.

Overall I really didn’t change anything about my pitch. I kept the main elements that people seemed to enjoy, so the enthusiasm, the clarity, and the fun musical approach. Some wording was different I suppose, I described more on what the app actually does. Also the song I used as my example was “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes.

  1. Hi Karina,

As a former flautist I really enjoyed how you incorporated your trombone playing in the pitch. It definitely adds a personal tone to it!

As for your idea, while I think it's a good one I'm not sure how easily it would be implemented at a technological level. Maybe its implementability is a question for another time (when you're further along the development process). I'm studying computer science, which is why I brought up the technological aspect to begin with.

Now things to consider for your pitch:
1.) Try to tell a story during the course of your pitch (especially at the beginning). While you did introduce a scenario that definitely applied for your idea, I think your pitch would benefit even more with a short story of a time you wanted to know the melody in question.
2.) Underline the difference between your product and existing products, such as Shazam. Make it clear to investors that Shazam doesn't really work for a person who doesn't have the actual song with them and only have the melody in their head.

Overall, your pitch definitely showed some passion and I think you did a great job. Keep it up!

Feel free to check out my elevator pitch when you have the time. I pitched a phone app similar to craigslist but focused towards college students.

  2. Karina,

I think you could be a little less gimicky in your pitch. The concept is strong, and I love the name. The instruments may be personal, but at this point, the elevator pitch, I think it would be more impactful to keep it clean and professional. Instead of wondering what the piano and trombone are for, I want to focus on what you're saying.

I agree with Sebastian that you should call out differences between your product and Shazam because Shazam is the first thing that came to mind for me. I did understand as you went on that your product was more intuitive, but I would still highlight how your product is better, different than existing ones.

My venture idea is in another sphere from yours--it focuses on young children and families--but I would love your feedback on it: http://adventuresinent.blogspot.com/2016/02/elevator-pitch-no-2.html.

  3. As a music lover myself, I loved your idea, Karina. I definitely do think that I would use this app, if it were to actually be put in to play one day. Your elevator pitch video was also very nice, as you recorded it by two instruments. Check out my post at http://minaaomar.blogspot.com/2016/02/elevator-pitch-no-2.html

  4. Hi Karina, you definitely took an fun and unusual approach to your elevator pitch! I like the overall idea, but as others pointed out, you should really and clearly state how your idea is different than apps like Shazam and SoundHound. Also, the trombone is great for an internet pitch, but it probably wouldn't work as well in real life if you were actually talking to a potential investor face-to-face. Overall, however, you did a great job! If you'd like to take a look at my pitch that focuses on college students and young professionals, here's the link: http://nicmcq.blogspot.com/2016/02/elevator-pitch-no-2.html
